Can you edit /etc/default/grub and change:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash no_console_suspend"

then run sudo update-grub and reboot.

Then change to a virtual console (e.g. press Ctrl-Alt-F1) and login. Then run:

sudo pm-suspend

and see an oops message appears on the console. If so, can you take a photo of it and attach it to the bug report. Thanks!

There was no oops message on the console after the grub workaround. Also it was possible to resume after the suspend.

BUT, on every reboot, the screen was just black and the pressing of the 'brightness adjustment key' was needed to get to the working screen.

@Parameswaran, just to confirm, with "no_console_suspend" you are now able to successfully suspend/resume from the destktop and using "sudo pm-suspend"?

Also upon resuming the 'caps lock' led is lit but the actual input is in lowercase.

My sister has the same laptop and experiences the same problem:

 - either you use 'no_console_suspend' and suspending works (but your screen is only dimly
   lit and you can't get full brightness)
 - or you use 'i915.modeset=0' to be able to read the screen properly

If you need more information, please let me know.

@Parameswaran,

If you just just "i915.modeset" does this resolve the glitches mentioned in comments 6 and 8?

I suspect kernel parameter "nomodeset" will also help, perhaps one can try this to see if it is of any benefit.

If you can remove any workarounds and see if turning off the asynchronous pm suspend helps, use:

echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/power/pm_async
sudo pm-suspend

Please let me know if this suspend/resume works. Thanks

@Colin,
Workarounds given in 12 and 14 have the same results as that was for 4. i.e. Suspend/ resume work OK but with the glitches given in 6 & 8. That is given in #13 does not help suspend/ resume. i.e. The same original issue remains with nomodeset workaround.

The suspend / resume ops are working fine after a software update on 11/05/2012. Not sure what was the fix though. The reboot comes with lit screen and the suspend/ resume does not hang now. The caps lock issue is still there but seemingly an unrelated issue.

Suspend/resume does not work for me, but the backlight issue is fixed, no workaround needed anymore.

I tried the suggestions that worked for the original poster (psivaa) and they didn't work for me. So I think I have a different bug. Still hangs in suspend or hibernate. The screen goes black, but then there's high fan speed and no way to get out except manual power down. I don't know if I should file a new bug report or how to do that yet.

details of workarounds I tried:

1. editing etc/default/grub
(a) "quiet splash xforcevesa" (suggested elsewhere for generic video cards) => same hang
(b) "quiet splash no_console_suspend" then $ sudo pm-suspend => same hang, difference noticed on startup: a blinking cursor at 800x600 mode home position just after OS selection instead of black screen during that part of startup
(c) "acpi=off radeon.modeset=0" => same hang on hibernate, "suspend" removed from logout menu

2. commands suggested in #14 (and etc/default/grub back to original "quiet splash")
$ echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/power/pm_async
$ sudo pm-suspend
=> similar hang, except fan stayed off instead of going to higher speed as it did during other hangs

Fix for me changing this in /etc/default/grub.conf

- GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet nomodeset"
+ GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"

and i get accelerated graphics.

Im using kernel from quantal but i think it will work with precise kernel (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/q-lts-backport)
