Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

In the Fiesty beta CD the Basic Proceedure for connecting to the internet, outlined in /usr/share/gnoe/help/internet/C/internet.xml#internet-basic-procedure has a few errors in it.

First, in step one "System->Administration->Networking" should read "System->Administration->Network".

In step three, "Ensure *Enable this connection* is turned on", no such option exists any more.

Also, step five instructs the user to click the Activate/Deactivate button. This button does not exist any more either. Instead there is a check box next to each connection.

As a final note, Fiesty seems to have this nifty way of configuring (at least for a wireless) a connection via the tray icon that appears. The documentation may want to cover how this works as well.

Connecting to the Internet is a massive topic, which I think makes it difficult to work with in a topic-based way. Would it be possible to separate Internet and network configuration out into its own category?

We've discussed this on the mailing list a fair bit already. My personal view is that network configuration is pretty inseparable from connecting to the internet in the eyes of a regular non-geek user. But Kubuntu have taken the opposite view. Let's discuss it more on the list?

Easily getting a connectino to the internet is the A number one priority if you want average Joe to even think about using any flavor of the Unix or Linux operating system. Without it, the whole thing is worthless. An automatic internet configuration program is by far the most important program need on the agenda. If you want to write code for nobody, spend your time on something else.

I've made sure that these bugs have been amended. The Internet section is now much more complete and expanded into a format to assist users with finding answers.

Given more time, I think expanding the modem and ADSL sections would be an improvement.

I've taken ownership of this issue. Although there's been a huge improvement in the docs, there does need to be some further improvement.

As a note to anyone looking to report the absence of "Hardware Information" in Hardy Heron - I am aware and have already updated the wireless networking troubleshooting section.

With the upcoming release of Intrepid, I think that this can be closed as all the points in the original bug have been addressed.
