Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I tried to administer Compiz with the Gnome GL utility that i installed extra. My desktop kept flashing for about a minute and then Compiz refused to start. Even after I reinstalled compiz, it refuses to start even without the Gnome GL when i only use the ubuntu Destop effects utility. It broke something permenantly. I'm running a self compiled version of the latest Nvidia driver.

I'm not sure that these bugs are in fact duplicates - the symptoms are different. While this one involves gnome-compiz-manager, the other only involves the native Ubuntu Desktop Effects utility.

Ge-org Brohammer , can you please confirm whether or not desktop effects work through the Ubuntu utility before gnome-compiz-manager was installed?

Thanks!

Hi, I'm sorry for the late response due to South African holidays.

The ubuntu utility did work before I used the gnome-compiz-manage. After some web searching I think this problem might be coming from the Nvidia self compiled driver. I experimented with Beryl and found that I needed to add the following options to the xorg.conf file in addition to just using the nvidia driver as is:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Generic Video Card"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "UseFBDev" "true"
    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
    Option "backingstore" "true"
    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
    Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
EndSection

Compiz is working again but my title bars are black, beryl with the emerald window decorator works fine.

It sounds to me as though this is a different problem entirely from the one that it is marked as a duplicate of: the fix you mention implies a problem with was with the NVidia card, whereas in bug #110662 there is no NVidia card present.

Thanks,
-Gabriel
