Thanks. In that case, can you also please show:

  ls -l /etc/alternatives/default.plymouth

Do you recall making any changes by hand to your plymouth themes in the past?

Hi Steve,

There you go:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Dez 1 18:04 /etc/alternatives/default.plymouth
-> /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth

Yes, I changed the login screen background. After the upgrade it came back
to default, differently from my desktop and GRUB's initial screen, which
are still customized.

Right, so somewhere along the line you've made these files symlinks to each other, which is a configuration error. You need to remove /etc/alternatives/default.plymouth by hand and make it a symlink to /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu-logo.plymouth; after which you can switch to a different theme using 'update-alternatives default.plymouth'.

Changed in plymouth (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Invalid

Carlos, I'm reopening this bug report because there's evidently a pattern of users getting their systems into this state. Do you know if this is something that you had done by hand? If not we're probably looking at a package bug in one of the flavor themes that we need to track down.

Changed in plymouth (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → High
status: Invalid → Incomplete
summary: - package plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo 0.8.2-2ubuntu30 failed to
- install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation
- script returned error exit status 2
+ plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo install failure because alternative is a
+ symlink to self

Hi Steve,

I don't remember details of the customization, but I certainly followed a
tutorial do do it. If I can find which I'll let you know.
