kernel panic with ubuntu 12.04 install

Bug Description

I got a kernel panic running the 12.04 live cd which came out yesterday. it dumps me to the console and says "panic occurred switching back to text console". I was able to complete a full installation via the alternate install iso, but once i boot the installed system i get the same panic. My caps lock key starts blinking when this happens....also, I was running 11.10 on this machine before, so it's a kernel regression. It's a Dell Studio XPS 1340.

I'm shocked something like this was able to get through for a polished release. I can't even do a fresh install.

due to the nature of the bug, i'm unable to run that command. I can not get into the filesystem without using a live cd. which is how i fixed the problem. I used a live cd to run a dist-upgrade and all is well. Hope the kernel version that got updated gets pushed to the installers as well.

Hi there, I have the same Kernel panic on a Dell Studio XPS 13.
I tryied to launch the installation with the option "nouveau.blacklist=1" before "quiet plash --" (because it solved another problem on an other PC so i tried) and it seems to work for me (the installation is now in progress).
But maybe just a lucky shot :)

I was able to install using the alternate installer. However I am not able to boot post install. You will probably notice the same, not being able to boot post install with the same error message.

It is interesting though that so ar all affected systems have been Dell Studio XPS 13.

Hi,
It seems it works with the option acpi=off.
But after the installation, it must be added in the boot option of grub (I still did not find how to do it automatically^^).
Btw, after this, I also had to purge nvidia*, but I don't know if it is related to this bug.

The acpi=off option also doesn't seem to help in my case -Dell 1340 studio XPS 13 again.
nomodeset and nouveau.blacklist=1.Also seems to be useless.
Suppose it is something to do with the Nvidia hybrid SLI graphics card.

This looks very similar to bug 984387 That bug should be fixed.

Can you try the suggestion in comment #6 of that bug?

Indeed, the procedure proposed in the bug 984387 works very fine for me (boot ok and no more problem with nvidia driver).
Thank you very much :)

This bug should be fixed in the Ubuntu-3.2.0-24.37 kernel. This bug should not require the work-around with this latest kernel. Can the folks affected by this bug confirm they do not need the work-around when running Ubuntu-3.2.0-24.37?

If you still hit this bug with Ubuntu-3.2.0-24.37, please attach a screenshot of the panic.

Thanks in advance

I installed the kernel from precise-proposed and removed the file
"/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ite-cir.conf"
that I created following the comment #6 of bug 984387.

Now the boot is normal and all is fine for me.
Thanks again.

I upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.04 on a double-boot Sony Vaio VGN-FW31ZJ, and got all kind of problems. Rebooting after it seemed I was done I got massive kernel panic, and am no longer able to boot into Ubuntu. What to do?
I am really troubled that this 12.04 seems to be an untested or unstable version, to which ubuntu users should not have been exposed.

Same type of failure with both arch and the latest ubuntu live cd

I made it boot up with using
and adding

acpi = off
pnpbios=off

to the boot options

I haven't tried an install yet, but probably you will need to add this to your default boot options for your new install to work as well.

I will try it later in the next couple days and post back

Hi,

I recently download edubuntu 12.04.1 LTS from http://www.edubuntu-fr.org/telechargement and I've got the kernel panic !

My PC is a simple desktop with an old AMD Duron 1400MHz on ASUS A7N8X-X and 1GB memory. I boot on live DVD Edubuntu and launch the install on an old virgin HDD MAXTOR 120 GB. The install crash with a switch back to console (view screen shot).
I wasn't connected to Internet during install.

I can't boot because it happenned during the install, before the end of copying all files from DVD.

What can I do ? Trying an another distrib ? If I'm connected during install, will it work ?

Thanks for help if possible

Hi,

I've recently installed Kuduntu 12.10. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 17R, and whenever i disconnect then reconnect the charger i get a kernel panic, with the blinking caps lock and everything.
My system is completely up-to-date, it uses kernel 3.7.0-7.

Any ideas or directions?

Thanks,
