[nvidia-glx-new] X takes approx 20 min to start with nvidia driver unless "IgnoreDisplayDevices" is used

Bug #99030 reported by Raven

linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

This only happens when using the 3D "nvidia" driver.
Once started X works fine. Problem is, it takes approx. 20 min for X to start.
If I use the "nv" or "vesa" drivers, X starts normally.

Thank you for your bug reoprt:

Raven:
Could you attach the following files:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Could you also add the output of:
dpkg -l nvidia-\* | grep ii
lspci | grep -i nv
to this bug report?

Could you also indicate whether using
"IgnoreDisplayDevices"
as described on http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-d.html might made any difference?

Setting to needsinfo pending reply from Raven.

Here is the information you requested.
I have tried the "IgnoreDisplayDevices" option as you suggested,
ignoring CTR and TV. This made no difference.

Thanks

Does commenting out

Can you also indicate whether your feisty is up to date and if so does installing nvidia-glx-new help?

Sitsofe:

Load "i2c" made no difference.
Same thing with nvidia-glx-new .

Looking at the X log, it looks like it takes a long time for the nvidia
driver to finish it's preInit.
Just for information, this is a SLI card with two 6800 gpu's.

OK I'm out of ideas although the fact it's an SLI card might be a clue:

PCI:4:0:0 is the second GPU.
Another problem I am having, is that the primary GPU on the card is probed incorrectly, when I reinstall or boot a live cd.

PCI:4:0:0 is the GPU probed as the primary, I have manually change my xorg.conf to
PCI:5:0:0 to see anything on the screen.

Thanks for your help

Raven:
If after X has finally started you press ctrl-alt-backspace does it then take another 20 minutes before it finishes starting again?

Just out of interest could you attach the Xorg.log produced when adding
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT, TV"
to the Screen section of your xorg.conf?

Sitsofe:

Adding those options made a huge difference. Startup time is now about
30 seconds.
Attached is the X log you requested.

Thanks

Raven:
You can't attach files via email. You have to use the launchpad web interface...

Can you test whether
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
by itself and
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT, TV"
by itself makes a difference?

The magic worker is:
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT, TV"

Commenting Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP" makes no difference.

Oops, sorry about the logfile. Do you still need it?

Raven:
Yes the log file would be good. Could you also upload the output of:
sudo dmidecode
?

Just for reference here's what the NVIDIA binary driver readme has to say about the problem:
"some video BIOSes contain incorrect information about what display devices may be connected, or what i2c port should be used for detection. These errors can cause long delays in starting X. If you are experiencing such delays, you may be able to avoid this by telling the NVIDIA driver to ignore display devices which you know are not connected."
