Bug Description

I tried before this recording sound with Kubuntu Feisty and kdm. Now I installed Feisty again and I'm using Gnome and gdm. I cannot hear anything when I record sound or when I try Skype Call.

I wonder if this problem is because of alsa? I have same problem in Kubuntu and in Ubuntu.

I have HP nx9420 laptop with Intel

I can't either record sound, but I can make Skype calls in Skype 3.0, so recording works in Skype.

When I record sound in sound recorder, looks like recorder starts recording fine. After pressing stop the recorder tells that length is 4 seconds. But when I press play, nothing happens (playback slidebar is grayed out).

If I "save as" then I can hear the output of my microphone. "Save" or "Play" doesn't work though.

Hi,

Same problem: sound recorder grays out the bar, Skype cannot record, but I could when I was on Windows XP. I read various reports on alsamixer. After starting alsamixer, I press Tab once to get to Capture mode. I used the arrow keys to navigate to Capture, and set the volume to 100. The Mic column says "CAPTUR". In Playback mode, Mic's volume is set to 100, and Mic Boost is +20dB. I tried setting Mic Select to Mic1 or Mic2, to no avail. I really don't know where to search next. Any help would be appreciated.

The interesting parts of amixer's output are:
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch cswitch-exclusive
