Bug Description

I installed 6.10 Server and need to get at some packages in "universe". I uncommented the relevant lines in /etc/apt/sources.list to add the "universe" repository, but even after doing this, I still can't get "aptitude" to see any of the "universe" packages. Any suggestions?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the contents of your '/etc/apt/sources.list' file? Thanks in advance.

Sure. Here's the "sources.list" file from my 6.10 Server system that's having the problem.

What happens if you execute 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-cache search kstreamripper'? Thanks again.

After doing "sudo apt-get update", everything is suddenly visible -- including the "kstreamripper" package Brian suggested I search for as an example. Thanks.

I'm wondering, though, if there might still be a bug here -- should I have had to do that "update" manually, or should I have known that this step was needed after I uncommented those lines from my "sources.list" file?

This bug report is being closed due to your last comment regarding this being fixed with a configuration change. Due to the fact that you were editing '/etc/apt/sources.list' by hand it is expected that you would also run 'apt-get update' by hand. Thanks again for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Feel free to submit any future bugs you may find.

It would not be unreasonable, I would propose, to insert a comment into /etc/apt/sources.list, cautioning the user that if changes are made to this file, "apt-get update" should be run to cause those changes to take effect. And/or a comment to this effect in the "sources.list" manual page.

I find Rich’s suggestion extremely interesting. This would surely help people like myself understand things much quicker as they discover the package management system of Ubuntu.
