Bug Description

Binary package hint: terminal

terminal will not launch when connected to TV using svideo-out with nvidia binary drivers, running as separate X screen? it starts and the mouse pointer does that spinney thing for 10-20seconds, then closes?

works fine when disconnected.

I too have experienced the terminal not opening whilst using svideo exactly as you have described. Only difference for me is removing TV from Nvidia settings or disconnecting does not make the terminal start working again. I can't even "sudo nvidia-settings" because I can't open a terminal. Uninstalling and reinstalling the nvidia driver doesn't work either. Run application (alt+F2) and ticking "run in terminal" checkbox does nothing......don't even get the spinney thing.

I will clarify... i do have to restart X to get terminal to start working after disconnecting svideo cable.
<cntr-alt-bksp> and log in again.

I have had a problem extremely similar to this. After installing Ubuntu and then installing the Nvidia driver, terminal will not open as described above.

My case is slightly different because I do not have an svideo cable connected. Instead, I have a DVI LCD and a DVI-VGA converter going to a CRT.

Thank you for your bug report.

This bug is not about the program terminal (deceptive isn't it?) but instead seems to be nvidia binary driver related.

hardyn:
Can you indicate which version of Ubuntu you are running and what the output of
dpkg -l nvidia-\* | grep ii
is?

The more I think about it the more unsure I am of where to move this bug to. I'm going to try gnome-terminal to see what they make of it (perhaps its gnome-session related?) but I have speculatively changed the title in case it needs to be marked against the binary drivers.

Setting back to unconfirmed.

hardyn:
Assuming your virtual terminals still work the following could be useful.
1. Switch to a virtual terminal by pressing ctrl-alt-f2. Log in to the terminal.
2. Type
ps auxw | grep '[X]11R6'
. This will show you which X servers your machine is running, Take note of the first number after /usr/X11R6/bin/X (e.g. :0 )
3. Run the following:
DISPLAY=:0 strace -o ~/gnome-terminal-strace.txt gnome-terminal
Where :0 is the X display you wanted gnome-terminal to appear on. After ten seconds press ctrl-c .

The above should make a file called gnome-terminal-strace.txt in your home directory and might be useful for tracking down the problem.

Does it happen if you use the open source nvidia driver?

Note that the open source nv driver can't do dual head or TV-Out...

Using regular terminal.

cntrl-alt-fx does not work with the binary nvidia driver, i believe this has also been filed as a bug.

Can you do the following in a desktop that works:

1. Press the right mouse button over an empty area of the top panel. A menu should appear, choose "Add to panel..."
2. Click on "Custom Application Launcher".
3. Type
xterm
into the Name and Command boxes. Click OK. A new icon should appear in your panel.
4. Click it and a black terminal window should appear.

Assuming this bit works, now connect up the TV-Out and repeat your original steps but this time try and use this new icon to launch a terminal.
