I abandoned using the Ubuntu/* vagrant images in favor of kaorimatz/ubuntu-16.04-amd64 (https://github.com/kaorimatz/packer-templates). This is at least an open-source project so you could rebuild the images from scratch if you so desired ... and it's built using the vagrant way rather than the super obscure ubuntu imaging way -- which I found almost no documentation to reproduce a local environment to create the images. I'd suggest going that route since everything works well out of the box and it's well documented as well as well-contributed to (fairly reliable).
