Bug Description

After updating from a Breezy system that had the nvidia drivers (nvidia-glx) to Dapper RC, X didn't work because the nvidia drivers were missing. I had to reinstall nvidia-glx.

Same here. Completely missing.

even further... upon trying to reinstall the nvidia-glx driver I got:

"E: ntp-server: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: ntp-simple: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured"

That one I don't have. I've done a sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx and it went ok.

I updated to the Dapper RC. This is the output of glxinfo:

:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has the version 1.0-8756, but
this client has the version 1.0-8762. Please make sure that the kernel
module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.
Error: glXMakeCurrent failed
Segmentation fault

It looks like the kernel binary shipped is the wrong one.

I grepped through the logs. First it installed 1.0.7667, then it upgraded it with 1.0.8756, and then it replaced that with 1.0.8762 since that is what is currently in Dapper's synaptic listing.

However, the linux-restricted-modules have the 1.0.8756 kernel binary in it. Pretty frustrating ;p

Mine did something else:

Investigating nvidia-glx
Package nvidia-glx has broken dep on nvidia-settings
  Considering nvidia-settings 0 as a solution to nvidia-glx 0
Removing nvidia-glx rather than change nvidia-settings

It appears to be resolved. I went and updated my Kubuntu with the KDE 3.5.3, and then had to reboot because when I C-A-B killed X11 (to be sure KDM was reloaded), it wouldn't come back. I guess whatever part of the dist upgrade step I did required the reboot, because the existing kernel nvidia driver couldn't be removed (it was in use, of course, since I had my GUI up!), but was fixed with a reboot.

Perhaps there should be a way to indicate that a reboot is required.

Thank you for getting back to me.

I am attaching the log files.

As an aside, I did finally get the upgrade to work with nVidia, but only
after turning ON "PC Speaker" in the Volume Control. Apparently the
upgrade turned it off.

@Dylan: can you please provide your full logs (/var/log/dist-upgrade*.log). It should have asked you about rebooting, I wonder if something went wrong.

Thanks,
 Michael

This problem is fixed with the latest version of the upgrader. It will ensure that nvidia-glx is not getting removed.
