Bug Description

Ubuntu needs a wizard that will be activated when Places -> Network Servers is used to find another computer on the LAN. When a computer on the LAN is connected to, a wizard should pop up, asking the user to supply a username/password to log onto the remote computer. Once the username/password combination is confirmed by the remote computer, the individual has access to the visible folders on the remote computer.

This will mirror similar behavior seen when a user on a WinXP machine browses the LAN and selects an OS X machine. Once the user on the WinXP machine enters a username/password which is valid on the OS X machine, he sees that username's folders on the OS X machine.

For usability reasons, the end user on Ubuntu should not have to delve into config files. Instead the wizard should make the edits necessary (using gksudo if necessary).

this has nothing to do with NFS (as in Network File System). Avahi is probably what you want, and feisty will have it enabled on default. Don't know how far it will be implemented.

hi,
in fact, gnome-vfs does not support zeroconf publications of NFS shares (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=328107). It can display ftp or webdav, or ssh (sftp) shares, but can't display NFS ones.
(of course it can show smb ones with smbclient)
It's a pitty that with Gnome, the best automatic way to have shares between computers is to use samba (easy to share / easy to browse with ubuntu/gnome tools).
