Please be specific. What type of laptop do you have? Have you looked for your laptop at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam

Some people have had problems with their laptops being slow if they use the generic kernel. To see what your kernel is open a terminal and type

uname -a

Please tell me what kernel you are using and if you have a dual processor.

Hello
I have the same kernel since I install Edgy on my HP pavilion ZV5340EA.
I have the same problem when I boot without network.

The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 3000+

Thanks

I confirm this bug for Intel(R) Centrino Duo T2600 @ 2.16GHz.

It appears to manifest itself on both kernels (generic and 386).

Stopping the network (/etc/init.d/network) returns system performance back to normal but when the system is reconnected one needs to start it up again.

Could you check if you have this message in .xsession-errors

"host name lookup failure on localhost"

And could you check what contains the /etc/hosts file.

You should have something like that :

127.0.0.1 localhost mylaptop

After adding this line, it seems to be better for me.

I can confirm the same problem on feisty beta. Aside from very slow login, two panel applets, namely CPUFreqApplet and WeatherApplet, would fail to start, when there is no wired network connection.

The tip in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/69941/comments/6 works for me. Well, I removed the hostname from the 127.0.0.1 line in /etc/hosts myself shortly after upgrading to feisty, considering that the hostname is resolvable on DNS. :-/

Without the hostname in /etc/hosts, Gnome is much slower, even if there is network connection. For example, new gnome-terminal tabs shows up with a second's delay after Ctrl-Shift-T is pressed. I had "host name lookup failure on localhost" in .xsession-errors as well.

After putting back the hostname to /etc/hosts, everything returns to normal.

Also I had the same problem. But in my case I had something in /ets/hosts:
127.0.0.1 localhost

And also an undesired
127.0.1.1 mylaptopname.mycompany

(where of course mylaptopname and mycompany are my laptop name and my company... :-) )
The second may ahave come from the fact I gave my company's domain as default domain.
I cured the problem by removing the second line and changing the first line to
127.0.0.1 localhost mylaptopname

Thankyou very much for the support
