Bug Description
Launch the xubuntu 6.10 "alternate installer" and select "text" installer.
Proceed until reaching the screen requiring partitions to be allocated. The installer shows the entire hard disk as the sole partition and the only way to proceed is to wipe the existing partition table and re-partition.
Partitions not seen:
sda1, sda3, sda4 - ext3 (there is no sda2)
sda5 - Linux swap
sda6 - xfs
sda7, sda8 - native Linux
Several threads on the forum report similar experiences. Installers which have recognised the partitions include Mandriva 2006 and 2007, PCLinuxOS, Zenwalk, Sabayon and Fedora.

I tried to overcome the problem by partitioning the whole of the hard drive. That did not work, so I deleted all empty partitions.
Thereafter, the installer was able to identify the partitions and the unused space. It allowed me to ascertain the number of sectors on the unused space but would not allow me to partition it.
My next move, if there is one, will be to add a partition using another distro or installer and install something on it that I'm happy to lose. It seems that the Xubuntu installer is happy to use another distro's nest but will not build its own.
sda2, by the way, is an extended partition, encompassing the whole of the disk not included in sda1.
