Bug Description

Binary package hint: coreutils

This package is breaking the system:

coreutils_5.97-5.2ubuntu1_i386.deb

To fix this we have to downgrade.

Forum:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1793611&postcount=11

Problem:
We don't have X, neither network, eth0 and eth1 don't exist, after we install this new package and reboot.

Some people don't have keyboard..

(I have to download in Windows, because with the problem I don't have eth0 neither eth1 in ubuntu)
To Fix this problem:
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/c/coreutils/coreutils_5.96-5ubuntu4_i386.deb
dpkg -i coreutils_5.96-5ubuntu4_i386.deb

You might also try with dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/coreutils_5.96-5ubuntu4_i386.deb to see if it's still in your cache

(lithorus)

Fix Release:
coreutils_5.97-5.2ubuntu2_i386.deb

I confirm this. My system is lying fallow at the moment. I'm waiting for a repository rollback or a fix to be released. This needs to be fixed quick or else every feisy computer out there will be broken in a matter of hours.

Are you all absolutely sure it's 5.97-5.2ubuntu2 that breaks it and not 5.97-5.2ubuntu1?

5.97-5.2ubuntu1 contains a bad merge from Debian which would break the initial population of /dev by /etc/init.d/udev which would break LOADS of things (it did so on my system). This was fixed in 5.97-5.2ubuntu2 which is currently being synced to the mirrors. You can already find it here (assuming you're on i386): http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/c/coreutils/coreutils_5.97-5.2ubuntu2_i386.deb

Installing that package fixes it for me.

..oh, and this is not a security issue. It's critical, yes, but not security related.

And since I'm already spamming this bug with all my comments, I feel I should add that this kind of issue is what you can expect when running an Ubuntu version this early in its release cycle. If this scares you, you are playing with fire!

The 5.97-5.2ubuntu2 release is a FIX for the 5.97-5.2ubuntu1 which was terribly broken. The delay from the fix was released until it hit the mirrors has caused a bit confusion. But i hereby confirm that the bug is closed, in that coreutils 5.97-5.2ubuntu2 is running (and working) on my system as of this writing.

Thank you for your support, and thanks to the guys from #gnome-motu
