Bug Description

Good day,

I'm not able to make my HP LaserJet 1000 (usb) printer works with Ubuntu dapper.

This printers works fine with breezy if you manually download the latest foo2zjs driver from :
http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/
(foo2zjs in breezy doesn't have the firmware)

Under dapper, the firmware autoloading works fine but every thing I print stay in the queue without any error message (even with LogLevel set to debug).

But if I downgraded cupsys and libcupsys to breezy version (and replace /var/run/cups/cups.pid to /var/run/cups.pid in /etc/init.d/cupsys) the printer works fine.

I'm happy to provide additional info or test something if needed.

Regards.

I have this printer available as well. If more info is needed i might be able to supply it as well.

At first looks I can confirm the bugreport. Works in breezy, not in dapper.

Out of the box nothing happened in dapper (it did get recognized, etc, dmesg). After installing foo2zjs with firmware and hotplug script it makes some startup noises. This is the same for breezy btw. But in breezy you can actually print and in dapper nothing happens.

I can as well ( unfortuanately ) confirm. Printer is found, firmare loaded to /dev/usb/lp0 ( or lp1) but printing is not possible

Changed in cupsys:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

Same problem here, If I use the dapper foo2zjs build it gets detected and gives no problems in the CUPS management untill you send a printjob.
CUPS complains about "printer busy trying again in 5 seconds" and in my cups I find this:

I also uninstalled the official foo2zjs and installed http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz. at first it acted the same exept when I now send a printjob I get "printer fault" instead of the busy. The /var/log/messages shows this when I insert the printer.

I installed
cupsys_1.2.1-0ivoks0.1_i386.deb
libcupsys2-gnutls10_1.2.1-0ivoks0.1_all.deb
from the link above and the only differece I have noticed is that the status window now says printer-stopped instead of printer-paused...

is there any way of getting more debug information?
the entries in /var/log/messages and /var/log/cups/error_log are not verry helpful.

Try adding you printer then. Soon we will have new CUPS packages in Dapper which should help most of these errors.

It worked for me too. Here is the relevant text:

"1- it seems that the hplip 0.9.7 has some problems recognising usb printers. Solution is to install the latest HPLIP version from hplip.sourceforge.net. This is no small task (at least for a linux newbie like me) as you have to uninstall the actual version, install the full compiling environment for the new version, dowload the version and patch, aplly the patches, compile, install, restart hplip and cups, etc (alouette...local joke). Current version is 1.6.6 and I sincerely wish that Ubuntu upgrades it's packaged version. In the meantime, carefully read and follow the installation instructions provided on the HPLIP site and everything should go fine.

2- some printers are special: like mine for instance (HP laserjet 1000) requires that it's firmware be downloaded to the printer at every power up. When I tried to install the printer in the new environment, there was no driver for my specific printer. I went ahead selecting a "close model" and I get the exact same result as "everything works as expected but the printer does not print". After some research, I discovered the pecurliar behavior of my printer when I found a linux printer driver for it at http:// foo2rjs.rkkda.com.

I can correlate this behavior with some people having "intermittent" problems with their printer if they shut them off between their computing sessions. So, in cases like this, make sure that you have the exact driver for your printer. I have found the link to my driver in Google by searching with "linux HP 1000 printer driver". Try it with your printer and see what comes out of it.

One final detail: make sure that user cupsys is registered in the lpadmin group. Another detail that I am not sure if it makes a difference (I did not test all possibilities) but I set the access right to /dev/usblp0 to rw for owner, group and others.

After setting all other CUPS and Samba networking configuration, I can now print from the local linux workstation, the remote linux workstation and any windows workstations on my network (I am a newbie with linux but and old, old goat with computers in general"

FOLLOW UP COMMENTS: The HPLIP update to 1.6.6 fixed my machine as well as the printing problems associated with SAMBA. The ODD part is that I too have a Laserjet 1000 and HPLIP specifically does NOT support this printer. But upon upgrading the printer showed up on the correct USB port and everything worked fine.

If someone is interested in testing hplip packages, add:

deb http://www.grad.hr/~ivoks/ubuntu/hplip ./

to /etc/apt/sources.list and run:

apt-get update ; apt-get install hplip hpijs hpijs-ppds hplip-data

Tested the repo on
deb http://www.grad.hr/~ivoks/ubuntu/hplip ./

after that:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Then go into KDE's System Setting, Printers, Add
The printer detected on /usb/hp_LaserJet_1000
Choose driver HP - Laserjet 1000 foo2zjs
Voila, it prints!

Big thanks Ante!

The LaserJet 1000 is not supported by HPLIP, so Ante's HPLIP update most probably will not have fixed this problem, but the "apt-get dist-upgrade" has most probably also pulled the foo2zjs update from the official repositories.

@Till
I don't think so

Before the steps above, I've updated the foo2zjs with the instructions from http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ , but things gone worse, as the printer doesn't even recognized anymore.

Also, the "apt-get dist-upgrade" doesn't touch foo2zjs, but only hplip hpijs hplip-data . The strange thing is, hpijs-ppds dissapear also. "The package has no installation candidate"

Can you (or someone else) test the HP LaserJet 1000/1005/1018/1020 with Edgy/6.10 beta (live CD)?

Have you installed the firmware on your computer before setting up your print queue?

Everytime after the installation of foo2zjs you can do this with

getweb 1000
arm2hpdl <file created by getweb> > /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1000.dl

Can you replace your file

/etc/udev/rules.d/11-hplj10xx.rules

by the attached one? Does your printer work now? You can test this both under Dapper or Edgy.

JohnFlux, can you report a new bug with that? Needing to unload a kernel module is a kernel problem. Assign it to the package linux-source-2.6.22.
