Bug Description

it seems dansguardian installation should be made simpler.

please see the ticket below that I have been trying to help (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+ticket/1978):

------quoting ticket---------
I am using the instructions provided by Olli' s journal for "Setting up DansGuardian on a single home PC running Ubuntu (/journal/item-985.php). When I tried to execute the sample commands the following occured:

cff@edubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install dansguardian tinyproxy
Password:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package dansguardian

When added the specific name and version of the downloaded software the following occured:

cff@edubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install dansguardian-2.9.8.0 tinyproxy
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package dansguardian-2.9.8.0

BTW, the software was downloaded to my desktop and as you probably suspect, I am a novice with Linux.

First, I want to make sure that it is known how appreciative I am for
all of the help that I have received from "towsonu2003". Second, I am a
volunteer to the Computers For Families (CFF) program www.sbcff.org , as
part of the IBM On Demand Community program, that is offering free
computers to elementary school students in order to erase the digital
divide in Santa Barbara. Last, the CFF program mission is simply "a
computer for every child who can't afford one". We want to replace
Windows 2000 with Edubuntu on the donated computers, therefore, we need
to replace the Windows only content filter, that is donated by
Cybersitter, with DansGuardian.

at least apt-get needs to throw out a dialogue helping the user set up dansguardian initially.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for the email to report that the DansGuardian bug 65533 "importance"
status has been changed from undecided to medium. If you were not able to see
my comments that were added after the bug was reported, they were as follows:

+ First, I want to make sure that it is known how appreciative I am for
+ all of the help that I have received from "towsonu2003". Second, I am a
+ volunteer to the Computers For Families (CFF) program www.sbcff.org , as

+ computers to elementary school students in order to erase the digital
+ divide in Santa Barbara. Last, the CFF program mission is simply "a

+ to replace the Windows only content filter, that is donated by
+ Cybersitter, with DansGuardian.

Twenty systems with Edubuntu 6.06 were distributed to elementary students last
month. Therefore, it is very important that the DansGuardian content filter be
installed on these systems as soon as possible.

Thank you, again.

Milt

Hello Daniel,

Would it be possible for me to beta test the solution for this bug? If so, this
would expedite the addition of a content filter to the 20 Edubuntu systems that
have already been given to the elementary shcool students.

I can reproduce this bug. It occurs because the lists files don't exist.

I'm not sure whether you are supposed to create those yourself or to get them from some external source. I need to setup dansguardian myself for a community computer center, so I'll look further into this and see what I can find.

So it seems that per the DansGuardian website, the blacklist is something that you have to pay a subscription for - see http://dansguardian.org/?page=blacklist

Seems you can download this one time from URLBlacklist.com for free, but if you need it on an ongoing basis, you'll need to purchase a subscription or find some other way of maintaining the blacklist.
