Bug Description

Warning: I can not replicate this problem.

I am using the ubuntu-server-dapper-amd64-15Feb2006 image.

First, my partitions were like this following:
/dev/sda1 empy (20 GB)
/dev/sda5 / (10 GB)
/dev/sda6 /test1 (10 GB)
/dev/sda7 swap ( 1 GB)
/dev/sda8 /test2 (10 GB)
/dev/sda9 /test3 (10 GB)
/dev/sda3 /extra (19 GB)
/dev/sdb1 /extra1 (80 GB)

Instalation GRUB failed, the message was:
"install device not specified"

The I tried this partition.

/dev/sda1 / (20 GB)
/dev/sda5 /test (10 GB)
/dev/sda6 /test1 (10 GB)
/dev/sda7 swap ( 1 GB)
/dev/sda8 /test2 (10 GB)
/dev/sda9 /test3 (10 GB)
/dev/sda3 /extra (19 GB)
/dev/sdb1 /extra1 (80 GB)

which was successful.

Last, I tried this:
/dev/sda1 /iubuntu (20 GB)
/dev/sda5 / (10 GB)
/dev/sda6 /test1 (10 GB)
/dev/sda7 swap ( 1 GB)
/dev/sda8 /test2 (10 GB)
/dev/sda9 /test3 (10 GB)
/dev/sda3 /extra (19 GB)
/dev/sdb1 /extra1 (80 GB)

which was successful too.

Any clue?

I give up!
I tried to delete the MBR using "dd".
But I could not replicate this bug.
I guess that I have pushed a wrong button :(.

Can you send a log from the failed installation? If not, and you cannot reproduce the problem either, there isn't much we can do from here.

I manage to reproduce the problem. See bug 35819

It seems that it is not an AMD64 specific problem. You can not install GRUB twice, if GRUB already exists.
