breezy->dapper: My lvm devices have disappeared

Bug Description

Hi,
  Just done a breezy->dapper dist upgrade (9th April, started at 5pm BST)
My LVM partitions seem to have disappeared; /dev/mapper now only
has a 'control' node in, none of the subpartitions
(I'd expected /dev/mapper/totality-cross
                                             totality-local
                                             totality-misc
)

If I do an /etc/init.d/lvm start then I see something almost sensible
in /dev/mapper

Dave

OK, so I've found them lurking in /dev/evms/lvm with subtly different names;
why did this change from lvm to evms - is this a new default in dapper?
If so then something needs to look at rewriting the /etc/fstab on the upgrade

Hmm, the initramfs looks at the root path to determine what to start. So If your root is on evms, it will start evms, which starts as much of lvm as it needs. Its possible that the bug with udev being not in the evms pre-requisites would cause what you were seeing: can you confirm this being an issue with evms 2.5.4-5ubuntu4 ?

Yes, this still seems to exist on 2.5.4-5ubuntu4.

dg@gallifrey:/etc$ ls /dev/mapper/
control
dg@gallifrey:/etc$ ls /dev/lvm
/dev/lvm
dg@gallifrey:/etc$ ls /dev/evms/
dm hda1 hda2 hdg1 hdg2 lvm md
dg@gallifrey:/etc$ ls /dev/evms/lvm/
totality
dg@gallifrey:/etc$ ls /dev/evms/lvm/totality/
cross local misc

My root is NOT on lvm, just a few other bits (/usr/local, /discs/misc and /discs/cross)

(actually this change forced me to look at the evms tools - they rock! I wouldn't object to
ditching the lvms interface in return for evms and changing the paths to point into /dev/evms/lvm
etc)

No,
  /dev/totality does not exist
