Could you build a debug package of evolution-data-server to get a backtrace with it as described by https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash ? If that's an issue for you we can probably do a debug build and put it on a website to download for you (what architecture do you use)?

Thanks for the backtrace. The crash happens to pango but it lacks debug informations for it. Could you start "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/debug:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH gdb evolution" to get the backtrace?

As requested a new backtrace, hopefully this problem will be solved soon so that I can get back to reading my mail.

Thanks but the new backtrace is not a debug one. Do you have libpango1.0-dbg installed?

The bug seems to have decided to hide, rejecting for now - I will reopen if pango decides to be a bad boy again.

BugBuddy reports that the debug trace is no good. I'm new to ubuntu. how do I add the debug in. It crashes every time on startup. So does the entire openoffice suite. There are some other programs that also crash on startup.

What do you mean by "BugBuddy reports that the debug trace is no good"? Do you get a window saying that? What is the message exactly? You can get a backtrace using gdb:
- gdb evolution
(gdb) run
... get the crash
(gdb) thread apply all bt
