Bug Description

Firefox will not display lowercase, italic "r" with Bitstream Vera Sans at size
14 point. Replicate this with the default Firefox preferences (Proportional =
Vera Sans @ 14) and viewing a site with content that includes an italic "r".
First seen at Slashdot. Replicated with the following HTML code with other
sizes and weights included for comparison. Problem "r" is on rendered line 3.

(Though I've seen this problem since the 1.0.6 packages.)

Also seen on a Debian testing box with the following versions:
ttf-bitstream-vera 1.10-3
mozilla-firefox 1.0.6-5

Robb, doing a fresh install of firefox and ttf-bitstream-vera I am unable to
set Proportional =
Vera Sans in edit -> preferences. I am limited to Serif and Sans Serif for
proportional. Have you done anything special to allow Vera Sans as proportional?
thanks

I did nothing special to discover this. This occurs on two freshly installed
Breezy boxes and one slightly elderly Debian Sarge.

Proportional is defined as either "Serif" or "Sans Serif". The two fields below
the Proportional selection are the fonts to be used for "Serif" and "Sans
Serif". The Ubuntu defaults for these two are the generic "serif" and "sans"
which appear to default to Bitstream Vera Serif and Bitstream Vera Sans
respectively.

Hi Robb,

Thanks to your very helpful test page I was able to reproduce this when selecting the Bitstream fonts explicitly as in your second example. However we have now changed the default font to DejaVu and so the default settings no longer cause this problem. I'm setting the severity to Minor, but I'm also tempted to close it.

Thanks Robb for the helpful test page.

I tried with DejaVu 2.6 (on WinXP/FF1.5) and I could not reproduce it.

Could you please try with DejaVu as well on your system? DejaVu is derived from Bitstream Vera, and it is actively developed.

I fixed this problem a while ago. I'll see if I can close the bug report.

This problem still exists in Vera but I have fixed it in DejaVu with instructions. If you want I can apply the same change to Vera. How is Vera maintained anyway?

Sorry for my delayed response, folks.

I second Keenan's confirmation that the problem still exists with Vera.

The problem does not occur with DejaVu. If that's the default, I'd say you're done unless you want to apply the fix to Vera for all the Firefox profiles out there that date back to when Vera was the default.
