Bug Description

the latest version of firefox in edgy makes gmail thinks its an unsupported browser, and force the "basic HTML view".
I think its related to a change in the user-agent string.

the same is also true for epiphany. both worked great in gmail with the dapper version

the reason is ubuntu changes the user string to omit the Gecko/$build_date part of the useragent string.

I found this note in the changelog for1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.4-1ubuntu1, under the 'differences between ubuntu and debain' part of the changelog: "Less detail in the user agent string"

Changing the useragent string to include Gecko/00000000 lets gmail work correctly again (defualt useragent can be overridden by adding the general.useragent.override pref).

the override is to add a new config element

so go to about:config

add

general.useragent.override

as a string type and set it to

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4

should work then.

Setting general.useragent.extra.firefox to Firefox/1.5.0.4 Gecko also works, and that key is defined by default

This is now working by default with the latest Firefox available in Edgy (1.99+2.0b2+dfsg-1ubuntu2)
