Bug Description

This is a weird bug, sometimes while I'm reading/writing in Greek everything
looks normal except for the letter "pi" which is from another font and looks out
of place. This doesn't happen always, and it happens in different apps (gaim,
firefox etc.)

Here is a screenshot of this problem, watch how the letter pi (you know, the
letter you used for 3.14159...) looks alien as it's from another font:

Vera (the default font) has a peculiar character for Pi.
As Vera has top preference in the fonts (see /etc/fonts/fonts.conf), no other font can override and fix.

Possible solutions are
1) Can we remove Pi from Vera
or
2) Can we put DejaVu on top preference instead?

I confirm this bug in a dapper fight 5 installation. Lower case "pi" letter looks strange within greek text. It seems like coming from a different font.

Confirming bug.
The issue is the font preference list found in
/etc/fonts/fonts.conf

"fontconfig" handles this file.

Kostas Papadimas and then Konstantinos Togias verified that the latest updates in Dapper change the font preference list, placing DejaVu on top, over Vera.

Therefore, I am closing this bug report. Thanks George for filing this.

Jib, the issue you describe with the screenshot (thanks, you show eloquently the issue) is related to "kerning", that is, the special placement of characters that depends on which others are around them. For example, "i" is rendered differently if it is "Wi" or if it is "fi".

Could you please
1) file a new bug report under the "pango" product
2) add this attachment to the bug report, using the "Add Attachment" link on the right of the page
3) Click on "Subscribe someone else" at the new bug report and subscribe me (simosx).

There is a discussion on this issue at the DejaVu mailing list, and currently it tends towards an issue in Pango.
