Bug Description

After a network connection dropping, if I try to close GAIM it hangs.

Running gaim -d, GAIM logs this:
tray icon: dealing with queued messages on exit
account: Disconnecting account 0x820baa8
connection: Disconnecting connection 0x821e068
server: removing NOP
jabber: Sending (ssl): <presence type='unavailable'><status>Logged out</status></presence>
jabber: Sending (ssl): </stream:stream>

and then stops.

Running gdb gaim, when it hangs I press Ctrl-Z in GDB, and the output of bt is:
(gdb) bt
#0 0xffffe410 in __kernel_vsyscall ()
#1 0x377fe281 in recv () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6
#2 0x36d7092d in _gnutls_handshake_buffer_clear () from /usr/lib/libgnutls.so.11
#3 0x36d70d5c in _gnutls_io_read_buffered () from /usr/lib/libgnutls.so.11
#4 0x36d6d55c in _gnutls_recv_int () from /usr/lib/libgnutls.so.11
#5 0x36d6e471 in gnutls_bye () from /usr/lib/libgnutls.so.11
#6 0x37201dd0 in ?? () from /usr/lib/gaim/ssl-gnutls.so

GAIM version 1.5.0+1.5.1cvs20051015-1ubuntu2.

Thanks for your bug. Might be one of those gnutls issues known upstream

I have this same issue. When i come back from a suspend or hibernation gaim is obviously not connected anymore because my wireless card has been turned off for some time. might it be best if when your wireless card is turned off or connection reset that gaim would auto drop your connection and ask you to relogin when you regain your connection. When i come back from hibernation and it appears as though gaim is still functioning it is confusing to users because they think everything is ok.

Same here, filed it upstream and they say it's resolved in the 2.0
betas. Couldn't confirm on those betas so that seems to be correct :)

Dennis, can you give me a bugzilla#? This was present, at least, in Gaim 2.0b2. I've got b3 installed at the moment and I'm going to test the bug later. With a bugzilla# it'll be easier to add a comment to an ongoing bug report.

Cheers Dennis. Indeed it's fixed in beta3.

Most likely not.

why not? as far as long term support is concerned it is going to be a
lot easier to maintain 2.0 for the next 3 years.

It would be. But I cannot give any sort of reliable estimate of when 2.0.0 will go out the door in a finalized form.

LSchierer, I'm sure you know a lot more about what is going on with
gaim than i do. would it be that horrible to ship the beta or cvs
version? ubuntu has done this with larger software packages in the
past, notably openoffice.org.

if we can't have gaim 2.0 in dapper can we get this bug fixed in 1.5.x?

If you or somebody else sends an easy patch for that no problem, but that's likely to not be a trivial change

So Dapper users are just going to have to deal with it.

For all of you that care about this. When i disable my gmail talk account gaim doesnt crash anymore. can anyone confirm this is the same with them. Is it just GTalk or jabber in general?

Beta3 is would not be a horrid snapshot to ship with. It is no worse than some of our historical releases have been. I'd be careful pulling svn from recently though, as we merged in a migration from libao to gstreamer for audio that has not had much testing yet.

Marking as fix released since 2.0 beta3 is in Edgy. For Dapper, please request a backport if necessary.
