Yep, that's a known problem. We once tried to port Gobby to Avahi which failed because we did use Zeroconf in a, in their view, wrong way.

This warning does no harm and is more a "beg the developers to port it" message. You could disable it by setting "AVAHI_COMPAT_NOWARN" to 1 in your environment. Without the HOWL compatibility layer there wouldn't be any Zeroconf support at all in Ubuntu.

You could also say that in a release distribution targetted at end-users this is a bug in Avahi.

I don't know if its related to this bug, but I get in addition to the console warning above this warning message box:

"Howl initialisation failed. Probably you need to run mDNSResponder as root prior to Gobby. Zeroconf support is deactivated for this session."

Then you need to install avahi-daemon. I thought that I put a `Recommends' on it into the package's dependencies, but packages.debian.org proves me wrong.

I have installed avahi-daemon, and selected it in the Services control panel, and I've restarted my PC, but I still see this error. I think it's a problem with the avahi-daemon startup.

Is avahi running?

ps aux|grep avahi

Could you please explain how Avahi does not "correct(ly)" tell the application about discovered services?

I would be keen to see native Avahi support in (g)obby and am willing to help if possible.

Can you try: cat /etc/default/avahi-daemon

also note that this error will popup (the 'warning you are using the howl compat layer') whether avahi is running or not, if thats what you are referring too.

According to the PorchDog guys, Howl is dead. The Howl page now just offers links to Apple MDNSResponder and Avahi. Just thought you might want to know.

Personally, I'll be using Avahi since it's the most widely supported by the set of apps I'm using.

You are welcome to port it, we failed when we tried it.

If I only knew C. Heck, if I only had time to learn C.

Oh well, at least Avahi has a howl compatibility layer.

Phil - do you have a copy of the non-working patch? I'd be happy to have a look at getting it going, if I have the half done patch it may save me some time (if not I'll look at it anyway)

Andreas Niess helped a bit with Avahi support, so there is some progress on this. Needs further testing and {{{unpublish_all}}} support.

For what it's worth http://gobby.0x539.de/trac/ticket/116 thinks this is fixed in 0.4.3 if I read it correctly.
