Bug Description

For some reason, gq does not appear in the menu. However, if you look in Alacarte, it is shown as being visible. This appears to only happen to gq, so I suspect a malformed .desktop file.

Appears that gq is installing its .desktop into
/usr/share/gnome/apps/Internet/gq.desktop
which isn't being parsed by menus for some reason. Is this a bug in gq or gnome-panel?

Well, this is the old location, which was right for installation. The new location would be /usr/share/applications

If you update the package to GQ 1.0.0, it would appear in the menu.

Please update to GQ 1.0.0, it contains several fixes that make it more usabble than 1.0 Beta 1
