Bug Description

vertical lines are present in the usplash logo and text, spaced at approximately every 20 pixels.

i'm running on a Dell inspiron 8200. Breezy works without issue, but also displays vertical line distortions during usplash.

Thanks for the bug report. Can you tell us what error messages are displayed? The best way would be to attach a photo of the screen.

May be related to this: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/36667

I didn't see vertical lines, but the text of "Mounting root filesystem..." was stretched a bit... are you getting the same error messages as I am?

Sorry for the mess there. I got my links messed up, and did not realize hyperlinks were created automatically. Use these instead:

1.) Boot screen (usplash) contains vertical line distortions:

2.) Shutdown text seems "shifted," revealing light blue text underneath:

Hope that helps!

Ah, (at least) one more note. I switched back to Breezy, which is why the shutdown text is displayed (see linked-to photo 2, above). The usplash screen looks exactly the same in Dapper, however, so you can see what I'm talking about. Another place I get this type of distortion is in the text-based installers from Warty, Hoary, and Breezy.

Although the screen bugs are not fixed in Flight 6, the live cd now boots up fully (although it hangs for about 30 seconds while mounting the filesystem).

Also, in Flight 6, if I specify a resolution of 1600x1200 with the live cd, the screen bugs seem to go away. After this, when I install Dapper using the live cd's graphical installer, the screen bugs are gone.

However, I am left with two filesystems; one is named "Filesystem" and the other is named "File System."

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to report all these bugs, but hopefully someone will know where to put them.

anonym, please file separate bugs for each issue, so that we can assign them to the right package, so that the right developers will see them.

Is the original issue (boot failing on mounting filesystem) resolved?

Your LCD screen is 1600x1200, right? Then it would be a bug that this is not detected automatically.

I don't know which packages are involved here, so reporting bugs seperately is confusing to me.

Don't worry, we will help you move the bugs to the right packages. The "mount root filesystem" bug is one thing (and belongs here), the vertical lines (and 1600x1200 stuff) is another bug that you can create. Then, the double "File System" is a third bug.
I think the "30 seconds delay booting live cd" is a fourth bug.

There's no information here about a failure to mount the root filesystem. if you can provide a detailed report and error messages for that problem, please file a new bug. Meanwhile, assigning this one to the kernel, which is responsible for the video framebuffer used by usplash.

It would be helpful if someone would attach the screenshots to this bug.

Matt, given that the only bug appears to be a delay in mounting the root filesystem, I'm not sure what information you're looking to glean from a screenshot. In the Dapper Flight 5 live cd, a long string of errors were spit out, but with Flight 6 the filesystem seemed to mount ok.

For an example of the screen distortion, refer to this:

as was posted previously.

I've aleady responded (via email) to the previous comments. It looks like
my responses never posted. I'm no longer experiencing these problems -- I
got a new laptop which this bug doesn't apply to.

Best,
Jeremy
