Ubuntu-X

Bug Description

when running X using the fglrx driver (kernel 2.6.15), nothing is being shown on the screen (it stays black)
note:
it worked fine with the breezy version of fglrx
hardware: (According to X)

Device "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon R250 Lf [Radeon Mobility 9000 M9]" (ChipID = 0x4c66)
on compaq presario x1400. the card is labeled as 9200, although it isn't (known issue)

I couldn't find a log of the session with the fglrx drivers.
(the system get stuck, and doesn't respond to ctrl-alt-f1, etc)

note: using fglrx driver and booting in safe mode show the console in higher "resolution" -
the fonts are smaller, and there space for more of them.

attached: the log with the "radeon" driver session, in hope that it will provide some clues:

X seems to be working fine with the "radeon" driver (except the 3d acceleration, of course),
so my guess is that the problem is with the driver module.

note: i've used "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg to activate either the "ati" or the "fglrx" driver, no funcky messing around from my part..

my guess is based on a similar problem with on windows xp partition - i use the omega radeon driver 26.25a (available from http://www.omegadrivers.net/)
(as it provides some extra wide-screen resolutions, not available with the official driver)
whenever i try to upgrade the driver - either an omega driver or official one - i get similar result - the screen stays blank, and the system
stops responding.

but, as i'm niether a X or kernel hacker, so my guesses are, well, only guesses.

How can I attach a file? I can't seem to find an "attach" button anywhere on the web interface.
I don't have any host to post them on, either..
(is it an HCI bug, or simply not implemented?)

thanks in advance!

btw:
somewhere between the heaps of text, i've attached a part of the kernel log that seemed relevant.

I've found the following piece of information here:

P zt3000 / Compaq nx7000

Beginning with ATI driver version 8.19, the drivers fail to properly detect modelines that are compatible with the LCD screen of the HP zt3000 (and equivalent Compaq nx7000 model), and they must be inserted into xorg.conf manually. For the 1680x1050 LCD screen, inserting the following modelines into the "Monitor" section works:

       Modeline "640x350" 119.12 640 1728 1760 1840 350 1052 1058 1080

If you have the "1920x1200" version of the HP zt3000 the Modeline is:

       Modeline "1920x1200" 150.75 1920 2016 2048 2185 1200 1202 1208 1235
I've tried it using my machine, and it didn't work (maybe because i've only added the
last line. i've got limited time to test it, sorry.

can any of you confirm whether it works or not?

refer to : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver INSTEAD. For tweaking part, the only valid value for Option AGPMode is 1 (which is default). Otherwise you will get a dead blank screen.
