In nautilus or on my desktop, when I create new files (or copy files) they don't appear immediately, I have to press F5 to see them.

Thanks for your bug report. I reopened http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=311907 in the upstream bug tracker, which describes the same problem.

if you use "gnomevfs-monitor Desktop" does it get events about changes happening to the Desktop directory?

Yes, for exemple, when i create a new file :

nicolas@derive-n:~$ gnomevfs-monitor Desktop
Starting monitor for file:///home/nicolas/Desktop
Created event:
  -> monitor_uri: file:///home/nicolas/Desktop
  -> info_uri: file:///home/nicolas/Desktop/nouveau%20fichier
Metadata changed event:
  -> monitor_uri: file:///home/nicolas/Desktop
  -> info_uri: file:///home/nicolas/Desktop/nouveau%20fichier

(nouveau%20fichier stands for "new file")

notification seems to work fine and nautilus works fine for me, that would require somebody having the issue debugging it, sending it back as Unconfirmed until somebody else picks it up

I can confirm this bug:

My Desktop is equivalent to my homedir. If I create a new folder with right-click, it won't appear on my Desktop until I redraw it with CTRL+R. Nevertheless, if I create a folder in a terminal, everything works fine.

thomas@silverstar:~$ ps aux |grep gamin

thomas@silverstar:~$ gnomevfs-monitor .
Starting monitor for file:///home/thomas/
# New folder with right click
Created event:
  -> monitor_uri: file:///home/thomas/
  -> info_uri: file:///home/thomas/Namenloser%20Ordner
#Nothing could bee seen. At this point, I pressed CTRL+R, saw and removed the folder afterwards.
Deleted event:
  -> monitor_uri: file:///home/thomas/
  -> info_uri: file:///home/thomas/Namenloser%20Ordner
#Here the Folder vanished like it should. Now I opended a new terminal
Metadata changed event:

  -> info_uri: file:///home/thomas/.gnome2_private
#And created a folder with mkdir
Created event:
  -> monitor_uri: file:///home/thomas/
  -> info_uri: file:///home/thomas/Folder
#In this case, everything worked fine.
Deleted event:
  -> monitor_uri: file:///home/thomas/

Created event:
  -> monitor_uri: file:///home/thomas/
  -> info_uri: file:///home/thomas/Folder
Deleted event:

It happens with the right, create a new directory option on my box (but not when copying a file as stated by the first comment), I've updated the bug title and forwarded the bug upstream according to that: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=348097

You have to reopen this bug for FEISTY!!!! Changes to the directory's contents are not shown until F5. I opened a new bug #97439 for this but marked it a duplicate.

Markus Kienast (elias1884) wrote :

Actually it does not seem to be a duplicate. The reason for this seems to be somewhere else than nautilus. gnomevfs-monitor does not report the changes I make. Maybe gamin is not started or the necessary kernel modules not loaded on boot?

Ubuntu's updates of today fixed the bug for me.

I still have a related problem. I have nautilus set to displaying the size of the file at default zoom level. While it correctly updates filesizes as a file grows, it does not update file counts in directories. Should I file a new bug?

Bartek (tschew) wrote :

I should add that I'm on 9.04 and the update only fails if the operation causing the number of items in a given folder to change occurs outside of nautilus (e.g. in a terminal, downloading in firefox etc..)
