"On Top" menu bug

Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? How do you change the menu item? It works fine for me with the current version

I use Breezy and the included totem player. Haven't tried to "apt-get update + upgrade" it.

Could you elaborate the steps you take, so we can try to reproduce it?

1) Start Totem
2) Inside one of it's menu ("View"? I can't confirm since I'm not on a Linux box) there is an option "On Top".
3) Select "On Top" from the menu. If we look at it again, there should be a tick mark.
4) Right click on Totem's title bar. There is also an option to toggle "On Top" there, however it won't be ticked (eventhough Totem is now working in "On Top" mode).

The bug is actually the other way around. If you change the item inside of totem then metacity updates but if you change it in metacity then totem doesn't notice the change.

Yes, confirmed in breezy at least, this bug is still apparent

Confirmed on dapper also.

In the GNOME Bugzilla report, Bastien Nocera suggests to remove the option.

In Edgy, the "on top" menu is now synchronized with the desktop manager's "on top" menu: the bug is fixed in Edgy.

Any backport for Dapper or shall we close the bug?

I am afraid it is not fixed. Selecting "On Top" from WM pull-down menu still doesn't make a tick appear next to "On Top" position in Totem's "View" menu. I've tested it on Totem 2.16.x and 2.17.5 (backported by hand to edgy) with Metacity 2.16.x and 2.17.5 and Beryl 0.1.99. Neither of these combinations worked as it should.
BTW, the upstream bug report isn't actually about the same problem. It's only a feature request to implement more fine grained control over the "On Top" property, but it doesn't have anything to do with syncing it between Totem and WM.

About feisty, the bug is nearly fixed:

- toggling the "on top" option in totem always sets metacity's "on top" correctly
- toggling metacity's "on top" never sets totem's "on top"

BTW, gnome bug seems to be a more sensible solution: removing the "always on top" option in totem and adding a "on top while playing".

this is fixed upstream now

Im in 7.04 final and it is not fixed:
* Toggling the 'on top' property via the View menu will also set the window manager's 'on top'
* Toggling the 'on top' from the window manager will not set the view menu's 'on top'
