can only be fixed by removing the newly created 0 size file ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml

I can confirm this one as well. Choosing "Edit menu" eradicates any existing menus and makes it a little difficult to correct. Destroying ~/.config/xfce4/desktop/menu.xml brings back the standard menus, though. (Thanks for that tip. ... I was going nuts with that one. :)

Also reproduced in my system, ubuntu dapper with xubuntu-desktop installed (x86). There's actually a patch existing for this in Xfce bugzilla, and it's fixed in latest Xfce SVN builds based on comment in Xfce mailing list (http://foo-projects.org/pipermail/xfce/2006-June/017788.html)

Confirmed on my install as well. Simply removing the menu.xml file did not work on mine until I checked the 'save desktop settings' button when I logged out. Without doing this it did not replace the empty file.
