Bug Description
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg
This bug has been around since at least 5.04, and applies right up to Edgy flight 3, and can also be reproduced by starting any Ubuntu LiveCD. It is however not specific to Ubuntu, as It has also happened to me on other distributions.
Basically, when the installation completes, the x server fails to start on the first boot. This is easily fixed by logging in and editing the device section in xorg.conf to use the radeon driver rather than the ati driver.
This has happened to me on the following systems:
AGP 9600XT on an AthlonXP and P4
PCIe X600 on an Athlon 64
PCIe X800GTO on an Athlon 64 and a P4
I have also read reports about this happening on a variety of other 9 and X series cards, and it has completely stumped quite a few of my friends when they first install Linux, leading them straight back to a working w*ndows.
Just wanted to add a 'me too' - wrong xorg driver is chosen on my very generic Dell Dimension 5150 with cheap Radeon X300 PCIe..

I can't believe the QA team haven't experienced this already! :(
