problem with sound blaster live in dapper

Asked by Giuseppe

hi, this is the first time i installed ubuntu; i switched immediatly to "dapper" release and i added the kde 3.5.2 repository.
all seems to be good exept for the audio system that doesnt work.

my system spec is:

k7 athlon 2800 (barton core), 1 gb ram
sound blaster live! 5.1

i installed the k7 compiled kernel (2.6.15)

there are some packages i have to install to make alsa working ?

thank you

sudo apt-get install alsa-base

if that don't work read further.

the kernel you compiled may not of had also loaded into the kernel nor as a module. if this is the case, then that is your problem. i have the same soundcard and had the same issue as you after compiling, only to find out that i had unchecked sounblaster (emu10k1). here are some things to try...

> lspci
if you see Multimedia audio contoller: Creative Labs SB Live (or something similar) you are on the right track

if you have the alsa-base installed and it is still not working then it could be the fact it isn't compiled into the kernel correctly.

I have the same problem. Under hoary and breezy the sound was well, but after the update to dapper yesterday there is no sound any more. I am using the kernel "linux-image-2.6.15-23-k7" and alsa-base and some more alsa packages are installed. Under breezy there was no problem, the soundblaster live worked well.

Any ideas?

PS: There are some more reports of this bug in the german forum on ubuntuusers.de but no solution till now.

Ok, i solved the problem. After the update to dapper some settings in alsamixer have changed. PCM was muted (and mute was not visible in Gnome mixer) and wave-output was at 0. In my tests before i changed each setting separately but there were two settings i had to change.

My SoundBlaster isn't working in dapper either - I've done everything recommended above (and much much more) but still nada. It was fine in hoary and breezy. Dead as a doornail in dapper. If anyone comes up with something else to try . . .

I have a similar problem. My SB Live! 5.1 worked in Breezy and in Breezy upgraded to Dapper. However, a fresh installation of Dapper apparently confuses it with the onboard Intel ICH5 and uses that instead. I can't get it to use the SB. And in a freshly installed Edgy, neither the Intel nor the SB work.

I've tried lspci, aplay, modifying alsa-base and I don't remember what else. To no avail.

I've seen similar problems reported on the Kubuntu list in a number of places, so it is not rare.

This is a pain, folks! Help, please.

Can you help with this problem?
