Comment 16 for bug 1424815

I decided to review this also and see if Mike missed anything, but he's right on. It needs a pretty major rethink to make this work with highlighting, and to do it right. I'm sorry!

FWIW, I did create another clean-up branch to remove white-space changes and one unused (I think) 'id' change.
