infinityOS is on hiatus until August

Written for infinityOS by Ryan Oram on 2010-06-20

Due an overwhelming amount of both university and job related work, I have decided to put infinityOS on hiatus until the beginning of August. This includes package updates as well as core OS updates.

In the meantime, I recommend that interested users try out Linux Mint, an easier to use and cleaned up version of Ubuntu. http://linuxmint.com/

infinityOS will relaunch in August, based on the Ubuntu Lucid codebase.

Sincerely,
Ryan

Note: All versions of infinityOS released to date are fully compatible with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. Existing users of infinityOS will continue to receive security updates from the Ubuntu team and can use any package made for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic.

Info on the Git Code Repository

Written for infinityOS by Ryan Oram on 2010-06-16

We've decided to use Git as our revision control system as it will make it easier to collaborate with upstream projects (such as Debian, Xfce, and the Linux kernel) that use Git as well.

The infinityOS code repository is available at:

Reason for the ads on infinityos.net (Not a revenue stream)

Written for infinityOS by Ryan Oram on 2010-05-19

Due to possible criticism I have decided to post this:

The ads are not there as a revenue stream. They are there to pay for our web hosting (which is about all they cover).

We have also disabled them on many of the pages on infinityos.net, such as the front page, the screenshots, Get Involved, and Contact Us.

If you have any concerns about the ads, please contact us at "contact at infinityos dot net".

Thanks,
Ryan

infinityOS 1.0 RC5 is out

Written for infinityOS by Ryan Oram on 2010-05-18

infinityOS will be frozen with this release to prepare for 1.0. I'm hoping to release infinityOS 1.0 Marvin on May 24 (which is my birthday :P).

This release is mostly bug fixes, though a few games and utilities have been added. I decided to skip RC4 as there were a few bugs in the build that I had christened as RC4.

A list of changes is available here:
https://launchpad.net/infinityos/1.0/1.0rc5

Get it from:

Ryan

infinityOS is now a (friendly) fork of Ubuntu

Written for infinityOS by Ryan Oram on 2010-05-07

It's time that Linux grew up. Linux is now a production operating system. We want to play games and for Linux to have a proper audio framework that allows for game development. We also want desktop effects without our videos tearing. It's time we abandon X11 and PulseAudio and write frameworks for Linux that meet the needs of users.

I have serious concerns about the release system employed by Ubuntu and feel that the sound system it uses is inadequate for the needs of the average user (it can stream music to your kitchen but can't play games...).

The proposals I posted on the Ubuntu developer mailing lists were rejected so I will be taking infinityOS in a different direction then Ubuntu. infinityOS will remain 100% binary compatible with Ubuntu. My goal is for infinityOS to become the Firefox to Ubuntu's Mozilla.

The subjects of my proposals are "Ubuntu needs a new development model" and "Removal of PulseAudio from Ubuntu". The full discussions can be found at:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-discuss/2010-May/thread.html

Thanks,
Ryan
