I don't recall the details, but likely it picked up wrong versions of autotools. Running 'configure' had failed with this message (r11307 + diff from branch, on 2012-04-30):

 configure: error: cannot find install-sh, install.sh, or shtool in "." "./.." "./../.."

The diff from the branch doesn't apply cleanly to current trunk's configure.ac (r12149), and apparently you are suggesting a few changes to the modifications of autogen.sh as well: for easier testing, would you mind attaching a diff against current trunk you want to be tested?
