This would proably be fixed with "managed=true" in /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
Alternatively removing eth0 from /etc/network/interfaces would work but would stop us having a working network until the device is fully booted. (And breaks non-desktop images which don't have Network Manager.)
