OK, so this is partly due to the (fixed in 0.18) behaviour of the mesa module.

Prior to 0.18 it did a "dlopen(..., RTLD_NOW | RTLD_NOLOAD | RTLD_GLOBAL);" *when loaded* (not when selected).
