What's status of the window when you press close? Is it hidden or
visible? Is it frozen (doesn't react to user actions)?
Could you also open GNOME System Monitor (command
`gnome-system-monitor`) and check, whether there is a sudden increase
of CPU activity in the tab Resources, when you press close button of
Nuvola Player?
