Agreed. And that is why I've filed the other bug with GNOME. Like I've
explained there, there is no simple way of disabling a component in
favor of another. And the side-effect of those are what you've listed
above.

My first attempt was to push it to you guys. :-)
I'm surprised though that, as upstream, you aren't keen in ensuring
proper integration of your project into major Desktop Shells.
Onboard is pretty good. But I did not know about it. I only explored it
because I was fed up with Caribou, in its current state. I don't think
many (GNOME) users would be knowing about Onboard. And from what I've
grokked so far, neither is it a KDE project.
I recently moved to GNOME (10+ years I was using KDE) because of its
Touchscreen support. Diving into GNOME internals is definitely on my
list, but I don't know when I'd do that.
I think the best right now is to leave it as is. Until me, or the
original author, or someone else, comes back to you with a proper patch
and assurance to maintain it.
