Bug Description

It seems nothing is associated to ftp:// links. I think Nautilus is the best
app, today, to manage ftp, sftp, ssh, smb (etc) protocols. But Firefox could do
the job too, even if it's read-only.

Easy to do, but according to upstreams perhaps not a good idea, see this bug:

Well, I don't really see which problems this could cause... Using "nautilus
ftp://[user@]server[path]" works fine for me. But I guess Alex Larsson knows
Nautilus a bit better than me :)

Anyway, if Nautilus can't (or shouldn't) be set to handle ftp links, is there
any problem using firefox instead ?

I don't really get the problem neither, see my comment on the upstream report.
I'll wait alex's reply before acting on this, but using nautilus for
ftp/ssh/sftp/dav/... should be fine imho.

When i create an entry with Places --> Connect to server. it does work well with the nautilus but days after or maybe loggons later it open the ftps mounts with the firefox. And that is not right, it have to be open with the nautilus again

Even if upstream don't fix this to point at nautilus, I think we should definitely give ftp at least *some* default application for ftp:// links. Firefox/epiphany?

What do you mean? Clicking on a ftp open nautilus by default

Matthew East (mdke) wrote :

As I understand this bug, clicking on a ftp link doesn't open nautilus by default. Do ALT F2 and enter an ftp:// link: it gives an error.

Sure, by doing that you open the "run an application" dialog, and ftp:// doesn't look like an application name

Right, but it demonstrates that opening links with ftp:// doesn't work
because there is no handler. Try clicking on an ftp:// link in yelp: it
doesn't work.

Yes, it does here too. However, clicking an ftp:// link in yelp does not
work.

I don't think so: apparently the ALT F2 thing should work. See the
discussion on the upstream bug:

You're right, perhaps I'm seeing a yelp bug after all. Marking this bug as fixed. Sorry for wasting some of your time (ALT F2 didn't work for me before, but it does now >_< )
