Further investigations showed that this problem could have been caused by old LVM data on the disks.
I wiped out the 3 DASD disks (using 'dasdfmt --quick'), restarted the installation and it completed successfully.
With that I reduce the severity to high.
(attaching the logs for the successful install, after having wiped out the disks, just for the reason of completeness)
