Mi kernel is 2.6.27-10-generic on clean installation.

But I'm not reporting a bug in postfix, dovecot, or any other program.
Im reporting a bug in the documentation.
How to reproduce, make a clean installation of ubuntu desktop 8.10, install postfix as described here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/serverguide/C/postfix.html

Then Try to send an email from Outlook with or without password (AUTH) but without encryption (plain text: LOGIN).

Or even make the test proposed in the documentation with telnet mail.example.com 25, etc.
And you will see no LOGIN mechanism.
