Gah. I think I know what RAM is. I know that's not the problem here. I've been using linux since circa 1999 (not that that matters, just saying I'm sure I have memory to spare).

When you log out gnome sends a TERM to all the apps and they all hurry to save their state and this appears to cause the disk to thrash. So it could be fixed by caching the logout sound before sending the TERMs or perhaps renicing the process. Linux's scheduler is known to suck in this kind of situtation. But why am I wasting my breath, bug's already been rejected.
