Ubuntu freezes

i have 1024mb of ram on my pc and ubuntu only works if i remove one of the sticks so i have 512 left in. i swapped over the memory...works fine, it just won't work with both in!

The memory may be duff. You can test it using the "memory test" function on the Ubuntu CD. Leave it running for ~24 hours with both sticks in place to test it.

i don't think it is the ram. if it were, one of the sticks would crash it, and it works fine with either...it only freezes with both in together...i am also using xp pro and that works fine with both memory sticks in.

Could you humour me and test it?

Are they the same speed/type?

What make / model of RAM is it?

What make / model of motherboard is it?

Have you overclocked it?

You should follow Alan's advice. I had a similar issue some times ago and with memory test I discovered that a couple of memory cells were damaged and caused weird crashes.
