Western Digital External USB HDD

Asked by Alpesh

Hi, i'm new to Ubuntu and have searched forums for this problem. I have a Western Digital External 400gig USB HDD, but when I plug it in, Ubuntu does not seem to recognise it. The USB flash disk automatically gets mounted and all is well, any ideas please?

Many thanks

Could you please plug in your HDD and report the output generated from dmesg command? Only the latest lines are useful.

Do you know the filesystem format of the drive, if it was formatted NTFS or has not been formatted yet it will not automatically mount when plugged in via USB.

If you have gparted installed check to see if it is visible when attached

If you would like to install gparted open a terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install gparted

Then go to "System > Administration > GNOME Partition Editor" to run it.

On the right you should see a drop down list of all drives attached. If your drive has never been formatted and has no data on it I suggest formatting it to ext3 after which it should automatically mount nest time it is plugged into a USB port.

hi!
i had a similar problem, some usb hard disk are password protected.
if that's the case, you should load your hard disk with windows and disable the password protection.
I know this is not the "safest" choice but i don't know any better... maybe someone else can help

bye
