Yes, I've seen it a few times now, and just reproduced it on demand again.

If I log out normally and then immediately log in again, I get the same sort of hang - gnome session seeming unresponsive, stuck splash, and gnome terminal and eg gedit not opening. Note that the splash redraws with no text on it.
