  Thank you very much for enlightening comments on Avahi slowdown problem. I am a very new Ubuntu user and encountered this same problem with frozen boot up windows and very slow performance under avahi.
  If I switch to eth0 without avahi I am fine. I have also tried installing more elements of avahi and java and mono. I am testing this set-up now.
  Hope I am not too late to catch this particular train of thought. Thanks for the help.
