Comment 4 for bug 96475

Apparently, the settings I make regarding the Close/Create effects stick until I switch on 'transparent cube', in which case they are reverted to fade in/out even though beryl settings manager claims it is set to glide.
Switching the cube back to opaque fixes the effects, too.
