Next day & re-try using same box
- hp 8200 elite sff (i5-2400, 8gb, nvidia quadro 600)

Today I used manual partitioning;
sda1/ESP - re-used sda1 (keep or no-format)
sda2 for / - format ext4

process ended with this on screen (likely identical to yesterday)
